POM-C

Polyoximethylene Copolymer

(Acetal Resin)

Polyoximethylene (Acetal Resin), abbreviated in POM, is a mostly known technopolymer with the commercial brand of the Delrin® belonging to the du Pont (other brands: Ertacetal C, Sustarin, Zellamid 900). It is produced only by extrusion.

The POM is monomer while the POM-C is the co-polymer.

Features

POM-C is one of the most stable materials, has high tensile and abrasion resistance, a low coefficient of friction, and is a highly crystalline non-porous and therefore non-permeable material. It is a rather rigid technopolymer, stable at high and low temperatures, withstands continuous use from -40 ° C to +100 ° C. It has low moisture absorption (non-hygroscopic) and is a good electrical insulator. It is also suitable for food use. Compared to PA6, it has a lower resistance to abrasion, especially in dusty environments.

Processing

Acetal resin is one of the most popular technopolymers thanks to its excellent workability with machine tools and automatic machines (cutting with circular saw, turning, drilling, milling with cdc); in fact its stability allows to obtain very narrow dimensional tolerances and in lathe machining, unlike PA6, it does not make chips that “knead”.

Applications

Thanks to its mechanical characteristics, POM-C is one of the most widely used technopolymers for obtaining mechanical parts such as bearings, cams, gears with low modules, sliding wheels, guides, dimensionally stable precision parts.

Being food, it is used in applications in contact with food. Being ignoscopic it can be used in the presence of water up to 80 ° C as well as in the nautical environment. Thanks to its good chemical resistance it is used for pump bodies, flanges, parts and chemical plants. It is also used in the electronics industry as an insulator.
